Attending the World Cup is a privilege, and as someone who has been to three previous editions, I'm both excited and apprehensive about the 2026 tournament in the US, Mexico, and Canada. The usual anticipation is tempered by a sense of dread and uncertainty, as the finals will extract every penny from attendees through dynamic pricing and artificial scarcity. Football Australia's controversial FA+ membership program, which offers a chance to secure World Cup tickets but with no guarantee of success, only adds to the frustration. Despite the challenges, I'm determined to make the most of the experience. My journey began with a mix of tickets secured through FIFA and FA ballots, including $84 tickets for a conditional round of 32 fixture and a category 1 ticket for a round of 16 contest at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. I also managed to snag an extra match in Seattle through a last-minute purchase. In total, my expenses for 15 tickets amounted to $5,829. Accommodation was another challenge, with stays in Vancouver and Seattle costing upwards of $1,000 per night. However, I managed to find a cost-effective stay at a university campus in Vancouver through a bit of 4D chess. My travel plans include a scenic seaplane ride back to Seattle and a journey by Amtrak between Vancouver and Seattle. I always plan for Australia to finish as group runners-up, which means a game in Arlington, the largest city in the US without public transport. If they finish in one of the best third-placed spots, fans are in for a lottery as to their next destination. As for my Australian supporter flag, I got an Australian version made up for Mooroolbark, the member federation club I support. While I boycotted Qatar, I couldn't miss out on 2026, even if it meant financial strain. However, an unfortunate schedule change meant missing out on warm-up friendlies in Mexico and Switzerland. Despite the challenges, I'm looking forward to the experience and the opportunity to witness the beautiful game in a genuine football country.
